Sweater John

Biography

Sweater John       Age: 32

Sweater John is a compound artist and conversation starter based in Wichita Kansas, who has always been intrigued by the idea of responding to the culture and social climate that shapes everyday life. Through his Christian faith, he uses unorthodox materials such as skateboards, glass, and reclaimed wood as his canvas, and delivers an unconventional style of artwork that speaks on many different levels, unique to his own definitive style.

Work

Sweater John considers his art to be a craft that he is constantly fine tuning and his creations reflect this. By focusing on Christ first, and then  various techniques and carefully chosen materials, he achieves visually enticing results that CAN be seen as social commentary. His work may appear distinct and quirky, but by cutting past the haze of comfort zones to the heart of a matter, his works respond directly to the surrounding environment and uses his own experiences as a starting point. Through his work, John invites makers of all genres to speak on their beliefs, adding necessary voices to the needed discussions of today's world.

Collaborate

John's passion to inspire others and help them engage in the world has enabled him to meet and collaborate with other creatives (not just christian) in their spheres of influence, including, but not limited to: barber shops, coffee houses, tattoo parlors, auto restoration shops, music studios, and film/photography studios.

Artist Statement

As an artist, I know these two statements to be true: Faith cultivates People. Art cultivates Ideas.

Art is intended to break barriers and open minds, and it is the only form of expression that bridges the gap between an idea and the human condition. Art is everywhere. It has no winners and knows no rules. It is boundless. My faith in my savior Jesus Christ influences every aspect of my life, including the art I share with you. My faith is at the core of who I am and why I am able to create. My art, and more importantly my life as a Christian, help shape who I am. However, don't put me in box and limit what I can do as an artist simply because I have faith.

I use my call as an artist who is Christian , to call others to do the same. As followers of Christ and believers in his sacrifice, should we not be creating and cultivating culture? The arts have a giant influence on the world as a whole. America exports art in many forms across the world on a daily basis. Art that creates and influences culture. We as artist have a responsibility to engage in and create culture that ultimately points back to God. Culture that is not only inviting, but rooted in his truth.
